ADD & ADHD

I chose the topic ADD and ADHD because, had it been as well understood when I was a young student I think I would have been diagnose with ADHD. Also I see more and more family and friends kids being diagnosed with some form or the other. I loved going to school as a kid from elementary through high school. But I was always in trouble for being disruptive in class, I remember never knowing why I was in trouble and never understood what I was doing wrong. This lasted through my freshmen year of high school, thankfully declined for my sake and my parents. I think my parents were at my elementary school two or three times a week from about third to fifth grade.

The top five things I learned:
  1. ADHD is definitely real
  2. Many people with ADHD can excel in school
  3. ADHD is not a learning disability
  4. ADHD can be detected in a brain scan
  5. There are three types of ADHD
a) Hyperactive compulsive
b) Inattentive
c) Combined

Power Point by Daffy Yahalom: ADHD
1) A very informative power point giving by a student. I chose this power point because of its broad depth of information. In the video she gives examples of environmental causes that may contribute to the onset of ADHD in children. Also she gives examples of how an assessment and evaluation can be done to diagnose ADHD in a suspected child. She gives examples of teaching methods and how to approach teaching of ADHD children. They are; quiet and free work spaces, frequent task changes, use of visual aids, positive reinforcement, provide opportunity for physical activity, and flexibility in assignments such as extended time or modification of homework.

power point 3 to 1 males
2) I chose this for the wiki page because I thought it could show children and adults that there are many people in the world who have been diagnosed with ADHD many of whom we for different reasons see as role models. The video explains that the number of males diagnosed with ADHD is higher than that of females. Also the video shows the differing effects ADHD has on male and female children. The video also shows that there is a significant difference between ADD and ADHD which is exhibited by hyperactivity in ADHD kids. The video also explains that there is a host of other disorder that may go along with ADHD including eating disorders, substance abuse, bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety just to name a few. But what all people with ADHD and ADD have in common is inconsistency. I gave this video a 5/5 because of its positive message and information on signs symptoms and the comparisons of male to female children. Also I really like the music!!!!

history, signs, symptoms, possible causes, treatment, and classroom helpful hints:
3) This video by Rebecca Ryan covers all the aspects of ADHD from the history, symptoms, causes and current treatment types. Because of the concise yet very informative presentation by Rebecca i give this video a, 4 out of 5. But I would like the listener to pay particular attention to the signs that a student may be having difficulty and the helpful hints she gives for teachers in the classroom.

Fifty easy tips for parents of kids who have ADHD:
4) This video slide show covers fifty things you may need to know as a parent or teacher of someone who may have ADHD. What I did while watching the video was push the pause button on every topic so I would have the time to read all fifty tips (just a helpful hint). The first suggestion is the most important, “make sure what you’re dealing with really is ADHD”. I gave this video a 4.5 out of 5 because of the useful suggestions for both parent and educators.

Jumping Jacks In the Hall
5) This presentation is informative because the speaker uses actual examples of what has worked for her in specific cases, for this reason I gave this video a 4 out of 5. The teacher talks about how she would let the student do a variety of things to help ease his tension and hyperactivity as long as they fell within rules and guidelines as well as time constraints even a few minutes of jumping jacks in the hall if needed.

ADHD IS VERY REAL: it’s not a deficit or disorder
6) I chose to put this in the wiki page because I am aware of many people who say that ADHD isn’t real it’s just an excuse for lazy parents or teachers. Dr. Rory Stern is the presenter in the video and as a doctor gives some credibility to the belief that ADHD is real. Dr. Stern discusses the scans of the brain and what it looks like in these images of people who have been diagnosed with ADHD. He continues to go on and dispel other rumours of ADHD and the identification of ADHD in adolescents.

Three types off ADHD
7) In this video DR. Stern explains that there are three types of ADHD.

1) Predominately hyperactive and impulsive
2) Predominately inattentive
3) Predominately combined type.

Brain Scans for ADHD:

8) In this video Dr. Amen discusses the reality of ADHD and the effects on the brain that are detectable through brain scans or imaging. Even though he is trying to sell medication I found it interesting that ADHD is detectable by a brain scan. Dr. Amen estimates that up to 10% of the adolescent population in the U.S. has some form of ADHD. He also estimates that ADHD effects between 17-30 million Americans. Dr. amen also states that some of the medications given to ADHD diagnosed people actually makes them worse.
