I chose the topic of abuse and neglected children, because it's something that not everyone notices. Abuse and neglect is something that happens on a daily basis and not many people realize that it's going on. It's a sad subject that needs to be more noticed and have more people do things about. Having known people that have gone through family abuse and neglect it hits a soft spot for me to be able to explain how abuse really effects children in a negative manor.
The Top Five Things I Learned:
1. More children age four and younger die each year from abuse and neglect than any other cause.
2. There are four different types of abuse: Physical - bruises, welts, burns, bite marks or unusual marks on body. Emotional - may be to compliant or passive or very aggressive. Sexual - Indicators torn underclothing, stained, or bloody. Neglect - Dirty, have no money, tired, inappropriate clothing for weather.
3. Most of the time when a child is sexually abused it is by someone that they know.
4. In 2007 one-half of victims of child abuse and neglect were White (46.1%), one-fifth (21.7%) were African-American, and one-fifth (20.8%) were Hispanic.
5. Children with a disability are at a greater risk to be abused and neglected than a child without a disability.
